Rebecca (Theater 62) (1962)

Rushed but entertaining version of the classic
I stumbled on this old gem when looking for the even older Alfred Hitchcock classic by the same name. Although the general plot of this television version is not bad it does seem to be rushed to fit into the TV time slot. And, perhaps it is inevitable that a remake never seems to compare favorably to the classic original. It would be difficult, for instance, for any actress to match the mysterious presence of Judith Anderson as the frightening Mrs. Danvers not to mention any lead matching the presence of Laurence Olivier. Still, with all the faults including the rather blurred and aged quality of the film, it is hard not to like this offering even if just to be reminded of the classic it attempts to condense.

Just Fair in my Opinion
For one, this film had commercials in it. Vintage commercials, but still. It was "ok", I think it was over acted, but a lot of old films were.

Classic and Campy
I had never seen this production, and loved it - if not for the wonderful storyline and black & white cinematography, then surely for the campy commercials which are left in place. And the Chet Huntley/David Brinkley voice-over during the credits! Historic!
